Inspirational Story: Whatever Your Situation, True Love Will Not Leave You

That morning was a busy morning, around 8:30 a.m., an old man in his 80s came to remove the stitches on his thumb. He stated that he was in a hurry because he had an appointment at 9:00 am later.

I checked his vital signs and invited the man to sit down. I learned that it took an hour or so for her turn to arrive. I saw the man repeatedly looking at his watch and looked upset. Since I wasn't too busy with other patients, I decided to check the wound.

On examination, it appears that the wound has started to improve. So I asked one of the doctors to provide equipment to remove the stitches and close the wound. While I was treating the wound, we started to have a conversation.

I asked him if he had any other doctor's appointments this morning, because he seemed so rushed. The old man said there was none and he said that he had to go to the nursing home for breakfast with his wife. I then asked about his wife's health. He told me that his wife has been in the nursing home for a while now because she has Alzheimer's.

As we talked and I had finished wrapping up the wound, I asked her if she would worry if she was a little late. He replied that his wife no longer recognized who the man was, and had not recognized him for five years. I was surprised, then asked, "And you still see him every morning, even though he no longer recognizes who you are?"

He smiled as he patted my hand and said, "He no longer knows who I am, but I still know who he is." I tried to hold back my tears as he left. I got goosebumps and thought, "That's the love I want in my life." True love is not physical or romantic.
